A BRIEF HISTORY OF

ST. STEPHEN'S

50 Years of Worship,

Fellowship, and Service

Story of Stephanie Church

In the early 1950s, a small group of devoted people already part of the United Church community in Vancouver recognized the need for a local place of worship for the families moving into the newly developing residential area bordered by Oak and Granville Streets, between 49th and 57th Avenues. After lengthy trials, and deliberations, a worship service was held 6 June 1958 officially constituting St. Stephen’s as a congregation within the United Church of Canada. For some six years worship took place  in a variety of settings, until the present site (purchased in 1960) was developed with the current sanctuary. Several additions later, we are still blessed with a welcoming and warm environment for our worship and fellowship. We currently have about 200 members and friends on our roll, most of whom live within our neighbourhood. Most Sundays, a few of our worshippers travel from considerable distances to be a part of our Christ-centred community. And there’s always room for one more!
